The Question
What do the following
documents have in common: A.) a printed advertisement for brand name
cross-trainers; B.) a pamphlet describing a potential new
investment; C.) an instruction booklet that shows a step-by-step
walkthrough of putting together a stereo system; and D.) an article
in a professional journal that details a new surgical procedure?
The Answer
Each of these is an
example of a document that will most likely contain diagrams,
pictures, or a strong emphasis on formatting. These graphical
elements present a challenge to the translation process because very
often, the act of translating the textual elements of a document
will cause the amount of text to increase or decrease, depending on
the target language, and will thereby throw off the formatting of
the original document. In cases where documents with graphic
elements are to be translated, it is often necessary for the
translators to use desktop publishing software and hardware to
compensate for these changes, adding polish to the final
translation.

Multilingual Desktop Publishing Overview
Foreign language desktop publishing is a tough challenge.
Multilingual Desktop Publishing is a tough task that is not as easy
as Copy-paste or text importation. It is a challenging task even
using the best software and platform or a very experienced
typesetter. For graphic designers, it is important to remember that
documents may be required to be later translated into other
languages. Hence, simple, internationalized styles are much easier
to convert into other languages. An attractive, but complicated
professional English design can prove to be a nightmare when
publishing in foreign languages.
There are some factors that Desktop Publishers work on keeping in
mind that multilingual typesetters, will convert the page into
different languages –
Some countries have very low internet bandwidth making sites with a
heavy load of images and other high bandwidth content a hindrance to
the typesetter as it may take very long to download even one
picture. Therefore the design is kept as simple as possible.
-
It is observed that foreign languages take up around 30% more
space than English. If there isn’t enough ‘white space’, it will
become a tedious task for the foreign typesetter. While changing
font size, pictures, etc the positioning of the entire page
changes and therefore enough empty space is left for easy
multilingual publishing.
-
The use of style sheets makes work easier for the typesetter and
makes translation work more consistent.
-
Fonts used have to be compatible with special language
characters. Fancy fonts usually tend to be incompatible even
with popular languages like French or Spanish accents.
-
Proofreaders play an important role because all translated text
must be checked for punctuation, text placing, line breaks etc.
-
All file elements are stored together so that it is easy for the
typesetter to find all necessary sources. This means all text,
images, graphs, charts, and all other source files are provided
to the typesetter. All files are stored in lower versions to
make sure that if language typesetter does not have the higher
versions, the work is not held up.
-
Paying attention to cultural issues to make sure that the
language matches the illustrative content. Obviously if the
website is being translated in to a tropical regional language,
one cannot have pictures with Eskimos on it. Colors are also an
important facet because in certain cultures there is an
association with certain colors.
