Association Description |
|
EGYTA is one of the most important translation organizations of the Arabian World.
The EGYTA certification program was implemented in 2002. More than 20500 EGYTA members are currently certified, many in more than one language pair. A testament to a translator's professional competence to translate from one specific language to another, certification is awarded after a candidate passes an open-book examination administered under controlled conditions. Certification is available only to EGYTA members and remains valid as long as membership in the Association continues.
The website of EGYTA is not offered in English.

What is today known as the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI) is in truth an offshoot of the Nigerian Association of Translators and Interpreters (NATI).
NATI (not NITI) was founded in 1978 in the premises of the University of Lagos, Akoka Conference Centre and Guest Houses.
At a time when Nigeria was still basking in the euphoria of the famous oil boom and the rest of Africa, if not the world, flocked to the country in search of the benefits of the oil Eldorado, a group of fresh professionals, budding professionals and linguistically inclined academics met at the University of Lagos Guest Houses to fashion out the future of NATI, and lay the foundation for the evolvement of NITI, the Institute, which came about two decades after the Association, NATI. There were pioneering members from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who had been sent to the centers of excellence around the globe for the best training the available institutions of then could offer.
NATI was placed on the list of learned societies and associations that enjoyed federal subsidy, under the aegis of the Ministry of Education. Even if some clever civil servant woke up one day, may be after the first oil boom (we give in another) and thought that NATI was more a trade union than a learned society and so de-listed us, the fact remains honor had once been was due.
We believe the Government should kindly consider bringing us back to the list of those who should receive some form of annual subsidy. Our Nigerian language translators, especially those in the media, constantly expand the areas of possibility of our languages in the news translation on radio and television. It is thanks to them that government communicates with the grassroots. In the course of their work, our translators and interpreters contribute to national integration and national development.

The South African Translators' Institute
The South African Translators' Institute (SATI) is a voluntary professional association that serves the translation, interpreting and related language professions. It was founded in Johannesburg on 25 August 1956 by a small group of 18 (this number has grown to around 800). Its stated aims at the time were “to give the translator professional status and pride and to ensure an honorable position for the translation profession among the other professions” – the Institute wished to protect its members and equally to protect the public using translation services. In the spirit of its motto, Per interpretes pons conditur, the South African Translators' Institute is committed to playing its part in a changing world by helping to build bridges between people and groups and fostering in the community an awareness of the need for effective communication.
In pursuit of this goal the Institute endeavors to:
Promote excellence in translation and related fields, as well as clarity of thought and expression Ensure high standards of professionalism among its members through accreditation and the adoption of a code of ethics Provide support for its members both in their occupational lives and as members of a multi-cultural and dynamic society

Corporate members
Different fees apply to the two classes of corporate membership. The fees for 2009 are given below. Entities wishing to join after the first quarter of the year should contact the SATI office for details of the applicable fees.
The entrance fee is a once-off fee and the other fees apply to the 2009 calendar year.

SATI aims to support and safeguard the interests of translators and those in related professions. The following are its objectives as given in its constitution:
· To promote the interests of the translation profession · To undertake and promote research in the field of translation and to make the results of such research available
· To obtain appropriate publicity in newspapers and magazines and through other media and to publish and control a journal of its own
· To obtain the co-operation of experts and interested persons from universities and other organizations and of associations and bodies both in this country and abroad and to promote common interests and action
· To compile language and translation guides or to have them compiled
· To collect and utilize funds for the achievement of its objectives
· To introduce a professional code for translators and to work to ensure that members comply with it
· To work towards the establishment of proper training facilities for translators
· To introduce examinations with a view to admission to membership of the Institute
