The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Nova Scotia (ATINS) is a provincial association founded in 1990 with the following objectives:
· to give translators and interpreters of the province the opportunity to meet and discuss matters of common concern, and to provide a link with translators and interpreters of other provinces and countries;
· to promote the profession and development of its members; · to give users of translation services access to a body of competent professionals.
When it was founded, ATINS became a member of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), on an equal footing with previously-established associations of translators and interpreters in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and the Northwest Territories.
ATINS takes part in all the meetings of CTTIC, and has a share in its administration. CTTIC represents Canada within the International Federation of Translators (FIT), which is also an advisory body to UNESCO.
ATINS is also a member of the Metropolitan Halifax Chamber of Commerce.

The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) is the oldest organization of translators, conference interpreters, court interpreters and terminologists in Canada. It was founded in 1920 as the Association technologique de langue française d'Ottawa, and was incorporated the following year under Ontario Letters Patent. In 1962 the Association adopted its current name. ATIO is also the first translators' association in the world whose certified members are deemed professionals by law, for in February 1989 the Province of Ontario granted a reserved title for certified members of ATIO through the Association of Translators and Interpreters Act, 1989.
ATIO and its sister provincial organizations comprise the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), which is a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT). FIT, a worldwide organization, is composed of the many national translation organizations, and has earned the status of an official UNESCO consultative agency (NGO Category A).

ATIS, which is the only association of certified translators and interpreters in the province of Saskatchewan, is committed to high professional standards in its translation and interpretation services.
HISTORY
The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Saskatchewan was incorporated in 1980 with the aim of fostering and promoting translation and interpretation in the province. It is a non-profit professional association and an affiliate of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC).
THE OBJECTIVES OF ATIS ARE:
a) to provide a collective voice for its members; b) to ensure that members exercise the profession in accordance with its Code of Professional Ethics; and c) to give users of translation and interpretation services access to a body of competent professionals.
FOUNDING MEMBERS
The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Saskatchewan (ATIS) was incorporated in 1980 by a group of Founding Members with a common interest in and concern for translation and interpretation. Their aim was to foster and promote these professions in the province and to provide representation from Saskatchewan on the national Canadian Translators, Terminologists, and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), a member society of the Fédération internationale des traducteurs (FIT).

ATTLC/LTAC - Literary Translators' Association of Canada |

Since its inception in 1975 the Literary Translators' Association of Canada (LTAC/ATTLC) has sought to promote literary translation and to protect the interests of its members throughout the country. For most of its existence, the Association has enjoyed the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. LTAC members are frequent winners and finalists for the Governor General's Award for Translation, the Quebec Writers' Federation Translation Prize and international translation prizes.
Today the LTAC has approximately one hundred and twenty members. Although the majority translates works originally written in French or English, many work in other languages: Czech, Italian, German, Polish, Danish, Norwegian, Lithuanian, Russian, Dutch, Punjabi, Arabic, Yiddish and Spanish, to name a few.
The LTAC's efforts have benefited not only its members, but all translators in Canada. Among its achievements it has obtained codified recognition of translations as literary works in the Canadian Copyright Act, and a 50% share of Public Lending Right payments for translators.
The Association's activities focus primarily on serving its members and on raising public awareness of quality in translation. To this end the LTAC sponsors the John Glassco Prize, an annual award with a $1000 purse for a first book-length translation into French or English from any language.
The Association participates actively in all manner of cultural events, including national and international book fairs such as The Word On The Street, Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival and the Salon du Livre de Montreal. The LTAC represents Canadian translators at major literary events and organizes an annual conference on literary translation. It also has official representatives in bodies such as the Public Lending Right Commission. As part of its mandate to advance the status of literary translators, the LTAC is an active member of organizations such as the Canadian Conference of the Arts, the International Federation of Translators (FIT). The Association works in partnership with writers' representative organizations in Canada.
The LTAC publishes a directory of members containing relevant professional information for distribution to libraries, publishers and cultural institutions. It also distributes a model contract and provides advice to members on contract negotiations. Finally, the LTAC publishes Transmission, an internal newsletter featuring news of relevant cultural events and members' activities.

Full Membership – Requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residency and the publication of a book-length literary translation or its equivalent (articles, stories, poems), or comparable work in drama, film, radio, etc. Full members have voting rights and may be listed in the on-line directory. Associate Membership – Sole requirement is an interest

The Corporation of Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters of New Brunswick (CTINB) was founded in Fredericton in 1970 and became a member of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) in 1972.
In 1989, the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick passed the Corporation of Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters of New Brunswick Act, which set out the rules of conduct of the Corporation.
As its name indicates, the CTINB represents members of three language professions — translation, interpretation and terminology — in New Brunswick.

As a non-profit, non-commercial association, the resources of CTPCBA come from registration/certification fees, annual member dues, the courses, seminars, and symposia it holds, and the authentication services it renders.
The CTPCBA publishes a monthly internal newsletter, an academic magazine and specific communications proposals. It boasts a top-notch specialized library, and its greatest asset is the faithful membership who unselfishly work day in a day out to make CTPCBA an institution that determined quite some time ago to hold a position of consequence in the real context of the contemporary world.
The CTPCBA is a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), the association for all institutions that perform international level translation and interpretation services. It is also a charter member of the FAT (Argentine Federation of Translators), in conjunction with the associations of the provinces of Córdoba, Santa Fe and Catamarca. An active member of the CEPUC (Coordinating Board of University Profession of the Federal Capital), it is charged with the control and administration of the registration of Sworn Translators as supporting technical experts, within the Argentine justice system.

CTTIC was founded in 1970 and is the legal successor of
the Society of Translators and Interpreters of Canada (STIC),
which had been incorporated in 1956. It is now a
federation of eleven provincial and territorial bodies,

traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du
Québec (OTTIAQ) (formerly Société des traducteurs du

CTTIC has no individual memberships. Since professional organization is a matter of provincial and territorial jurisdiction, CTTIC admits only provincial and territorial bodies, variously called an association, order, society or corporation. Its total membership consists of the ten member bodies which, in turn, represent their own members.
In this way, CTTIC speaks nationally for about 3,500 language professionals, some 2,500 of whom are certified. Most member bodies publish directories of their members, which are available to the public free of charge or for a small fee, in paper format or on-line.

An important part of CTTIC's role is to represent the profession internationally, particularly through affiliation with the International Federation of Translators (FIT), which gives member societies a window on the world.
CTTIC also seeks close co-operation with the translation community in North America, namely the Literary Translators Association of Canada (LTAC), the American Translators Association (ATA) and the Asociación de Traductores Profesionales (ATP) and the Organización Mexicana de Traductores (OMT) of Mexico.
CTTlC holds periodic conferences to provide language professionals from across Canada with an opportunity to meet and discuss issues of national concern. Member bodies also hold conferences, alone or in cooperation with other organizations or groups interested in languages or communications, on topics of interest to their members.
CTTIC promotes the training of qualified language professionals through its member bodies, which cooperate with provincial and territorial educational institutions offering programs in translation, terminology, interpretation and related areas.
CTTlC represents the interests of its members at the national level in matters such as copyright for translators and relations between the federal Translation Bureau and other government departments.

The Nunattinni Katujjiqatigiit Tusaajinut, the Nunavut Interpreter / Translator Society was incorporated under the Societies Act of the Northwest Territories in 1994.
The operations of the Society are chiefly carried on in Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut. The Society is affiliated with the Canadian Translators and Interpreters Council and takes part in annual meetings. The Society is composed of both certified (members who have passed the Canadian Translators and Interpreters examinations), associated members, and corporate members. The great majority of our members specialize in Inuktitut / English and English / Inuktitut interpretation, although a few members have Inuinnaqtun / English - English/ Inuinnaqtun and French / English - English / French as a specialization.

The Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec is an order with a reserved title representing nearly 1,900 members, all of whom are certified language professionals.
As part of its mandate to protect the public, the Order has adopted the following mission: to ensure and promote the competence and professionalism of its members in the fields of translation, terminology and interpretation.
Mission
In issuing a permit, the Order attests to the competence and professionalism of an individual holding the title of certified translator, terminologist or interpreter, thereby fulfilling its mandate to protect the public.
Its mission is to foster and ensure the distinctive quality of its members' services and promote the titles that stand for this quality.

The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta / Association des traducteurs et interprètes de l'Alberta (ATIA) is the only association of certified translators and conference interpreters in the province of Alberta. The Association was founded in 1979 and is the only member for Alberta of The Canadian translators, terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC). Through CTTIC, the Association is affiliated with International Federation of Translators (FIT).
ATIA is an association of translators and interpreters with members throughout the province. Association members may be freelancers, independent translators, employees of translation / interpretation firms, government or corporate in-house translators. All members of the Association are bound by a Code of Ethics ensuring the quality of their work and guaranteeing confidentiality. The primary aim of the ATIA is to meet the needs of clients by ensuring, through its standards and certification procedures, that their interests are protected, and by facilitating their contacts with professional translators and interpreters.
The ATIA Membership is represented and served by an Executive Council, which is elected at the Annual General Meeting.
