Association Description |

AIIC
is the only worldwide association for conference
interpreters. Founded in 1953, it brings together more
than 2800 professional conference interpreters in over
250 cities in over 90 countries.
Language and languages are at the heart of international
communication. The possibility to say exactly what one
wants to say in one’s own language and to understand
perfectly what others are saying is a basic right. AIIC
plays a central role in guaranteeing this right by
working with all types of users to match supply to
demand. AIIC promotes the profession of conference
interpretation in the interest of both users and
practitioners by setting high standards, promoting sound
training practices and fostering professional ethics.
Membership in AIIC is achieved by peer review through a
system of sponsorship. By entering the association,
members make a commitment to respect AIIC’s stringent
Code of Ethics and Professional Standards.
The
association aims to represent the profession as a whole
and to act on behalf of all conference interpreters. By
expanding membership, especially in parts of the world
where the profession is now growing rapidly, and by
staying abreast of relevant developments AIIC aims to
contribute to the overall good of the community of
interpreters.

Understanding and fulfilling all of AIIC admissions

to help you understand the system and fill in the
application form easily and correctly. It is broken down
into two sections: 1) a checklist, for those already
familiar with entrance or reclassification requirements
and 2) a detailed guide, for those seeking further
clarification.

AITC
(the International Association of Conference
Translators) is the professional body representing
translators, précis-writers, revisers and editors
working on a temporary or permanent basis for
international organizations or conferences.
(Interpreters are represented by AIIC).
AITC
was founded in 1962 mainly in order to standardize the
working conditions and terms of employment of short-term
language staff employed by international organizations,
particularly those belonging to the United Nations
system.
AITC
currently has about 450 members, divided into three
categories (see articles 2, 6, 7, 7bis and 8 of the
Constitution):
Candidate members (translators at the outset of their
careers);
Active members (independent or permanent translators);
Associate members (restricted to permanent translators
who do not wish to be active members, and to retired
translators who wish to support the Association and
maintain ties with the profession).

Qualifications for membership:

Candidate members: must have had 100 days' work
experience in international organizations.
·
Active members: must have had 300 days' work experience
in international organizations.
·
Associate members: must have a permanent post or be
retired.
Subscription fee
·
Candidate members and associate members: 115 Swiss
francs/500 French francs/75 Euros.
·
Active members: 350 Swiss francs/1'500 French francs
/230 Euros.

Benefits |

AITC's activities are twofold: it endeavours, on the one
hand, to defend the interests of its members, and, on
the other, to ensure that work performed by them is of
the high quality that employers are entitled to expect.
It gives advice to its members on all aspects of their
work, in particular their terms of employment, both in
the organizations of the United Nations system and in
other international organizations or in NGOs.

In
order to ensure the quality of professional translation
and interpretation and thus meet the needs of the ever
changing global professional environment for highly
qualified translators and interpreters, it is the
mission of CIUTI to contribute to the development of
research in translation and interpretation and to the
continued development of the training of professional
translators and interpreters across the world.
CIUTI and its members aim to ensure a high quality in
the training of translators and interpreters. In order
to safeguard this quality against the background of
different national frameworks, CIUTI subscribes to the
principle of equivalence in diversity. CIUTI does not
aim to streamline the degrees of translators and
interpreters at its member institutions. Rather, the
diverse structures of higher education in the countries
of the CIUTI-members should be exploited to ensure that
the same quality standards are reached at the end of the
degrees.

Association Description |

Founded in Paris in 1953 by Pierre-François Caillé, FIT
is an international federation of translators'
associations which are located in nearly 50 countries
throughout the world. Through its member associations,
FIT represents the moral and material interests of over
60,000 translators on all five continents.
FIT
is a strictly non-political organization of professional
translators. As a non-governmental organization, FIT
enjoys Category A status with UNESCO and maintains close
contacts with many other international organizations.
Central Issues
Through its special committees, FIT endeavors to meet
the needs of members throughout the world by addressing
such issues as training, working conditions and
recognition of the profession. The UNESCO Recommendation
on the Protection and Improvement of the Legal and
Social Status of Translations and Translators, adopted
in Nairobi in 1976, is a milestone in the history of
FIT.
FIT
is proud of its achievements on behalf of the
translating profession. At the same time, it is well
aware of the work that remains to be done in order to
meet the growing demand for international communication
and cooperation. FIT, therefore, continues to play its
vital role in overcoming language barriers and in
promoting worldwide understanding.
Governing Bodies
FIT
world congresses are held every three years. They afford
translators with a unique opportunity to meet and
discuss the problems of their profession in formal
workshops and informal discussion groups. The FIT
congress also serves as the supreme governing body of
the organization. Following their election at the
congress, a Council and an Executive Committee assume a
three-year mandate to administer the organization's
current business. They are supported by some twenty
commissions and committees which regularly report on
their work and achievements to Council and Congress.
Regional Centers
FIT
creates Regional Centers, when deemed necessary, to
promote its objectives and enhance its overall
activities. The Executive Committee of a Regional Centre
organizes meetings in its region to foster dialogue
among local member associations, further the study of
specific problems and inform the governing bodies of FIT
of such problems. Since 1986, FIT has created the
Regional Centre North-America (RCNA), the Regional
Centre Europe (RCE), the Virtual Asian Regional Centre (VARC)
and the Regional Centre Latin America (RCLA).
Publications
BABEL and Translatio are the two regular FIT
publications, attracting a wide readership both inside
and outside the organization. The proceedings of each
congress are also published, and serve as a further
source of valuable information to those interested in
the many facets of the translating profession.

Membership |
|
Regular FIT members pay annual membership dues, ranging
from USD 300.00 to 2,000.00 depending upon the number of
members. There is a fixed annual fee for associate
membership (currently USD 350.00) and for observer
membership (currently USD 100.00). Associations /
institutions should also consider this recurring expense
when applying for FIT membership. The Statutory Congress
will not be able to ratify the admission of candidate
regular / associate members that have not paid their
membership dues and will exclude members that have
failed to pay their membership dues for two consecutive
years. The candidate regular member pays a fee of USD
350.00 until their admission is ratified by the
Statutory Congress.

principal objectives of FIT are: (a) to bring together
translators' associations already in existence; (b) to
sponsor and facilitate the formation of such
associations in countries where they do not already
exist; (c) to provide member associations with any
information and advice that would be useful to them; (d)
to develop harmony and understanding among all member
associations so as to promote the interests of
translators; (e) to uphold the moral and material
interests of translators throughout the world, advocate
and advance the recognition of translation as a
profession, enhance the status of the translator in
society, and further public appreciation of translation
as a science and a art.

The
International Association for Translation and
Intercultural Studies (IATIS) is a world-wide forum
designed to enable scholars from different regional and
disciplinary backgrounds to debate issues relating to
translation and other forms of intercultural
communication.
Ongoing internationalization and networking, increasing
population mobility, mass migration and rapidly
developing communication technologies all involve
cross-cultural representation of one kind or another.
Mediation is provided by translators and interpreters in
some cases. In others, it takes a variety of less
explicit forms and hence remains largely untheorized and
under-researched.
Institutions and individual researchers across the world
have been making questions of globalization and
multiculturalism part of their scholarly agenda. Others
continue to investigate more traditional issues of
translation and cultural transmission. Translation
studies is now an established discipline in many parts
of the world. Intercultural studies is emerging as an
area of study in its own right.
To
date, no single scholarly association represents the
interests of academics and researchers in these rapidly
growing fields across the world. Existing organizations
tend to be restricted in their aims and scope, whether
to the professional development of translators and
interpreters, to certain geographical areas, or to the
narrower field of translation. At the same time, issues
of translation and intercultural communication feature
only occasionally in the conferences and publications of
scholarly associations in such fields as anthropology,
comparative literature, or pragmatics. Hence the need
for a world-wide, broadly based association encompassing
both translation and intercultural studies.
