Program Description |

Certificate Program in Translation The Spanish Translation Certificate Program is not associated with a degree program and is offered at the undergraduate level to ASU students as well as to members of the community at large who are granted admission to ASU and meet the entrance requirements to the certificate program. Required courses for the certificate: Once admitted to the program, you will need to take SLC 401 Translation Theory* (offered every Spring) during the first year of the student's certificate program. In addition, students should complete three "Applied" translation courses, to be chosen among the following options*: SLC 481* Technical and Scientific Translation SLC 482* Business and Financial Translation SLC 494 Medical Translation
SLC
494 Legal Translation Finally, SLC 484* Internship (2 credits=30 hours) is required to complete the 14 credit hours necessary for the program

The Spanish Translation Certificate Program offered by Arizona State University is an excellent course for those willing to acquire a general specialization in many fields, covering technical, scientific, business, financial, medical and legal fields. The student probably won't become an expert based only on those courses, but he will have a good basis, and it will be easier for him to look for further specialization courses, or to translate simple texts in those areas.

The AHI Method
The AHI is committed to providing students individual attention. Improving a skill requires practice. Much of the Institute is spent in the language laboratory and small group workshops, working closely with fellow students and experts in the field on simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and sight translation techniques and strategies. Lab work is mixed with lecture, maximizing the impact of both while helping keep students fresh. Lecture topics run the gamut of areas important to working interpreters, from law, ethics, and protocol to specialized vocabulary, retention, note-taking skills, and self-instruction techniques, to forensics and regional distinctions in Spanish, among many others.
The Skill Building Workshop I begins with a self-assessment and continues with an overview of court and medical interpretation, including:
· Objectives of Court Interpreters · Useful Phrases for Interpreters · Interpreter Do’s and Don’ts · World Class Standards for Interpreters · Code of Professional Responsibility · The Profession of Medical Interpreting · Medical Interpreter Standards of Protocol · Glossary of Spanish Terms needed by the Medical Interpreter Also covered in the workshop are the additional topics:

The Agnese Haury Institute provides a three-week course designed to improve language and interpreting services in many areas. The institute’s forte is its flexible curriculum, enabling for example that students attend specific classes from the Medical Interpreter Training Institute, and with excellent instruction in judicial/legal interpreting.

Through a combination of theory and practice, students gain experience in translating or interpreting in specialty areas including health care, legal, literary and business. Complete this program by taking classes exclusively on evenings/weekends, or in a combination of day, evening and weekend classes.

Pima Community College has a well comprehensive course on translation and interpretation, although it offers only courses in the English – Spanish pair. A student will come out of it prepared for the most important aspects of the profession, including specific courses on consecutive, sight and simultaneous interpretation.
