Degrees

·               Translation (MAT)

·               Translation and Interpretation (MATI)

·               Translation and Localization Management (MATLM)

·               Conference Interpretation (MACI)

Each of the courses is designed to be a four-semester, 60-credit program, but students who meet the general admission requirements, demonstrate preparedness to enter second-year courses and hold a degree from a recognized school of translation and interpretation or provide evidence of significant professional experience will be considered to the nine-month MA program.

Course of Study

First Year

In their first semester, students in all four programs take the same required courses: basic translation and introduction to consecutive interpretation. MAT students may ask to waive the Introduction to Interpretation course if they are sure of their major, but most students will not know yet what their major will be. Applicants who have not taken a basic economics course are strongly urged to take one prior to enrollment, or as an elective in the first semester (course may be offered by the Business School). In their second semester, students continue to take a balanced mix of translation and consecutive interpretation, and simultaneous interpretation is introduced.  Students may begin to specialize in the second semester if they choose. By the end of their first year, students must complete all courses for one of the four Master of Arts degrees with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Second Year

In their second year, all students declare their degree specialization (MAT, MATI, MACI or MATLM) and refine skills that will enable them to succeed as professional translators and interpreters. They develop the discipline to be lifelong learners at the forefront of their profession, acquiring the knowledge, cultural understanding, and specialized vocabulary relevant to their work.  To complete the requirements for all four Master of Arts degrees, students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and take a final series of comprehensive professional exams.

University of California at Santa Barbara

UCSB Logo.

University of California at Santa Barbara - East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies Department

Program Description

TRANSLATION STUDIES

Translation studies is comprised of two distinctly different, but importantly related, components: translation theory and the practice of translation as a literary art. In the theoretical domain, students are expected to achieve conversance with the philosophy of translation as it has evolved in the West and in Asia, and to discover for themselves an understanding of, if not answers to, a number of abstract (theoretical) questions with significant implications: is an original text fixed and complete or incomplete and, in that sense, unstable? What is the relationship/s of a translation to an original? Is it inherently mimetic or can it be conceived as an interaction or even collaboration? What, theoretically, should a translation achieve or aspire to achieve and what, as a corollary, is the translator’s tasks?  The contemplation of these and related “big questions” is facilitated by close reading of the “canon” of translation theory including post-structural linguistics, and, more broadly, the philosophy of language.

In the domain of translation as literary art, students labor to render artfully texts from a source language into English. This difficult enterprise confronts students with questions of its own about the nature of reading in a source language, about style, and about the impact on the reader of “technical” approaches that range from literalism to abusive fidelity. The translation specialization is designed to encourage and enable students to apply, or at least to relate, what they have understood from their theoretical study about the possibilities inherent in translation and about philosophical goals to approaches, techniques and choices they will make as actual translators.

Costs

Check with the institution.

Editor notes

The course offered by the East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies Department of the University of California at Santa Barbara is a comprehensive introduction to the literature of translation studies, and practice in translation from Chinese and Japanese. Students will explore the extent to which translation theory can be usefully applied to translations in progress. It is more focused on literary rather than technical translations, and the course doesn’t cover translation tools.
