Program Description

Certificate in Translating Courses at UNC Charlotte

The CT is not equivalent to a major in a foreign language; rather it represents a theory-based skill developed at the bachelor's degree level. The CT is ideal for majors in French, German and/or Spanish who wish to add another dimension and UNC Charlotte credential to their study and mastery of one or more of these languages.

 

Introduction to Translation Studies

History, theory, pragmatics and procedures of the field of translation.  Introduction to text typology, terminology, and issues such as register, audience, editing, and  computer-assisted translating.

 

Practicum in Translating I

Comparative stylistics, restructuring texts, editing, troubleshooting, and techniques of the translator in working with a variety of text types.  Conducted in English and French or English and German, according to the language pair.

 

Practicum in Translating I

Comparative stylistics, restructuring texts, editing, troubleshooting, and techniques of the translator in working with a variety of  text types (e.g., business, legal, medical, technical, etc.).  Continues with history, theory and trends in translation.  Conducted in English and Spanish.

 

Practicum in Translation II

Critical analysis of different kinds of texts; translating for specific audiences; problems of terminology; development of working dictionaries in field(s) of specialization.  Conducted in English and French or English and German, according to the language pair.

 

Practicum in Translating II

Further work in restructuring texts, editing, troubleshooting, translation of a variety of literary and cultural text types (e.g., fiction, poetry, drama, essay, film). Continues with history, theory and trends in translation.  Conducted in English and Spanish. May count as course work for the Spanish major or minor.

 

Practicum in Translating III

Study of professional journals,  technologies, protocol and resources in the field (e.g., ATA, ALTA). Advanced issues of translation.  Translation of a semester-long project in individual consultation.  Conducted in English and French or English and German, according to the language pair.

 

Practicum in Translating III

Vocational, pre-professionalizing activities.  Study of professional journals, technologies, protocol and resources in the field (e.g., ATA, ALTA), jobhunting skills and information on accreditation.  Translation of a semester-long project in individual consultation. Conducted in English and Spanish.

Editor notes

With thirty years of existence, the German, French and Spanish Certificate in Translating at UNC Charlotte is a very practical course, with students working with different subjects along the course, such as literary, medical, legal and business translations, including also job hunting skills and translation tools.

Translation strategies are taught through practice at Wake Forest University, with emphasis on Spanish to English. Focus is on translating in domains such as social science, computing, economics, the entertainment industry, banking, and journalism. Program Description

DEPARTMENTAL CERTIFICATE IN SPANISH TRANSLATION

The certificate in Spanish translation provides a course of study that prepares the student in the special skills involved in the role of translator. The award of the certificate provides evidence of practical competence in translating written texts to or from Spanish; interpretation of spoken Spanish is not involved. There are four required translation courses that must be satisfactorily completed, following which students may take a demanding final proficiency examination. Satisfactory performance on the examination entitles the student to receive the certificate in translation. Those students whose performance is judged only adequate may receive credit for completing the course sequence, but will not be awarded the certificate. The certificate requires 12 s.h. credit as follows:

DEPARTMENTAL GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN HISPANIC STUDIES

The graduate certificate in Hispanic Studies provides students with opportunities to develop advanced/superior Spanish language skills as well as to deepen their understanding of Hispanic cultures, including their literatures. No particular configuration of courses is required. The certificate is flexible enough to allow students to design, in consultation with the program coordinator, a program to suit their personal and professional needs. The certificate requires 18 s.h. of credit, 12 of which must be at the 6000-level, chosen from the following courses:

Both programs offered by the East Carolina University are introductory courses to translation, providing the students with an overview of the translation profession and with evidence of practical experience translating texts from and to Spanish. The Graduate Certificate in Spanish Studies also comprises many Hispanic cultural aspects and Spanish Linguistics, knowledge which is very useful for a translator.
